Jim
Stratton’s introduction to the electrical trade began with his employment at Stratton Electric, Ltd., owned by his father, James (Barney) Stratton in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
He was professionally trained as an electrician through the apprenticeship program.
After working in his trade for many years, Jim, with his wife Coral, made a decision in 1988
to embark on a new venture
that would lead to the familiar recognition of STRATTON
ELECTRIC, INC. As President, Jim started his business
with just two employees, his wife
and himself. The end of 2006 closed out with
upwards of 40 highly skilled, and dedicated
employees under the roof of SEI.
Jim's
business philosophy was rooted in three keys to
successful business strategy, 1. Developing and
enhancing upon a core business focus, 2. Establishing recognizable differentiations between
your products and services and those of your
competitors, and 3. Guarding your competitive
advantage by implementing cost containment
procedures that will safeguard your profits.
Thereby setting the agenda for success you have - Focus
- Differentiation - Cost-Containment
- as the driving variables to success. This
philosophy is still used today.
Jim
was asked what he felt his primary reasons for
success were. He immediately answered,
"We do things well, and we do them better
than our competitors. We keep a key focus on our
costs so we can provide good pricing to our
clients - and we give them more than they expect
and certainly more than we promise."
Subsequent to his outlook on business, Stratton
Electric, Inc., has grown from a two-person firm,
with annual revenues in 1988 of under $100,000 to
over $4 million annually in 2008.
The
largest single project Stratton Electric, Inc. has
ever undertaken was the new construction of
several facilities at the Lake Worth High
School. With school construction, and
retrofitting of schools, flourishing over the
years, SEI has become, "one of the most
recognizable and well-respected Electrical
Contractors in South Florida".
Firms
that can attract repeat business will always hold
a competitive advantage over their
competitors. In Jim's case, his business
flourishes in the light of a more than 50% repeat
client base. It traditionally costs seven
times as much to create a new client as it does to
retain an existing client. Monies saved go
directly to the bottom line. That is where
cost containment drives profitability.
In the construction industry, relationship building, based upon a superior reputation, a high-level of skill and unshakable integrity, is stock and trade. Jim Stratton portrayed all of the above and was recognized as a person who always gave more than you expect.
