FAQ's
The
following questions will help you determine if you need an
electrician.
-
Do
circuit breakers trip often?
This
is often a warning of an overloaded circuit.
-
Are
you lacking GFI (ground fault interrupter) outlets where
required?
These outlets are required by the National Electric
Code in certain
areas of the home. They are usually
identified by a TEST and RESET
button.
-
Do
lights dim when air conditioners or appliances start up?
This temporary current draw
can damage sensitive equipment.
-
Do
you have to use extension cords to reach devices in any
rooms?
Using extension cords to
provide additional outlets can overload a
circuit and can be hazardless
if run under carpets.
-
Do
any switches or outlets feel warm?
This could indicate a loose
connection and can be a shock or fire
hazard.
-
Do
all the outlets accept three prong plugs?
Older
style receptacles may not accept the third (grounding)
terminal.
This terminal provide
additional safety against electrical shock
hazards and should be upgraded.
-
Do
your receptacles need plug strips to provide additional
outlets?
Plugging
in additional items can demand more from an outlet than
it
safely handle. This can be a
fire hazard.
-
Have
you noticed wires to your switches or receptacles with
crumbling insulation?
This
could indicate old and deteriorating insulation. If this
condition
exists, it should be upgraded.
If
you answered yes to any of the questions above, you should
call a licensed electrician.
